Is Upwork automation safe?
“Automation” covers very different tools. Some only watch for jobs. Some write a draft. Some log in as you and send proposals on their own. The risk to your account is not the same, and the question to ask is simple: who presses send?
Three kinds of tool
| Kind | What it does | Who acts on your account |
|---|---|---|
| Job alerts | Watches for new jobs that match your filters and notifies you. | You do everything else. |
| Drafting assistants | Scores the job and writes a draft proposal for you to edit. | You read it and submit it. |
| Auto-bidders | Picks jobs and sends proposals for you, often around the clock. | The tool, under your name. |
The first two leave every action on Upwork to you. The third acts as you, which is where the account risk sits: proposals go out that you never read, Connects are spent on jobs you never chose, and the activity does not look like a person.
What to check before you connect any tool
- Does it ever submit for you? Look for a setting that sends proposals automatically. If one exists, assume someone will turn it on.
- Does it ask for your Upwork password or a login session? A tool that signs in as you can do anything you can.
- Where does it run? In your own browser on pages you open is different from a server somewhere acting on your account.
- Can you read why it picked a job? If it cannot explain a score, you cannot check it is spending your Connects well.
- Have you read the terms? Upwork's Terms of Use and policies are on its own site and they change. Read the terms of any tool you use as well, ours included.
How BidGrow works
- 1
It watches for jobs
New Upwork jobs are read and matched against your skills and your rules.
- 2
It scores each one
By fixed rules you can read: payment verified, spend, hire rate, rating, activity, competition, Connects cost and rate fit. No AI is involved in the score. Try it on any job with the free job scorer.
- 3
It drafts the proposal
From your own template and profile, with answers to the screening questions, in the Chrome extension on the Upwork page you opened.
- 4
You press send
You read it, change what you want and submit it yourself. BidGrow never submits, and never logs in to Upwork as you.
Questions
Is it against Upwork's rules to use AI to write proposals?
Read Upwork's Terms of Use and its policies yourself rather than trusting any tool's summary, ours included. What matters most is who is acting on the account. A tool that drafts text you then review and submit yourself is in a different position from one that logs in and sends proposals under your name.
Does BidGrow submit proposals for me?
No, never. BidGrow finds the job, scores it and drafts the cover letter and screening answers. You read it, change what you want, and press submit yourself. There is no setting that changes this.
Does BidGrow need my Upwork password?
No. The Chrome extension works in your own browser, on pages you already have open, signed in as you. BidGrow never logs in to Upwork on your behalf.
